| The work triangle was devised in the 1940s. It identified three pivotal elements in the kitchen as the sink, refrigerator and the range, which outlines a path of movement throughout the space. A triangular arrangement was thought to be the most workable design pattern for most kitchens. While space limitations still influence design, today's kitchens function altogether differently from those of 50 years ago. The kitchen, in some cases, has become the central meeting area of the house. The result is that the kitchen triangle may have to be compromised as the kitchen is laid out to accommodate family members and guests.
An experienced designer works within design guidelines, but in some cases can deviate enough to ensure that the space works for you.
